So regarding that new EU social network (which is said to be decentralized but unclear if that implies ActivityPub which would make it more relevant in my book); entering a string in the “invitation code” and clicking “continue” does not result in an XHR request to the server and there’s a lot of JS on the page to handle the invitation code.
This implies the code is checked in the browser so the correct code(s) is somewhere in the JavaScript. So it should be possible to reverse-engineer it, no? 😉
Any takers for this challenge?
@frank I'm intrigued what can you tell me about this new EU social network?
Not a whole lot know yet, the news broke on https://cybernews.com/tech/europe-social-media-w/ which has _some_ info but is sparse on details. It will be decentralized, so I’m hoping ActivityPub so I can follow along but could obviously also be ATProto (Bluesky protocol).
Update: it seems they’ll not only use ATProto, but simply just Bluesky itself; https://stage.wsocial.eu/
@frank ah bluesky implemented stupid age verification stuff here in Australia due to some BS laws so I no longer use and support bluesky. If someone wants to use the ATproto on something different I'll be happy to support the protocol as long as its open.
I believe in open web standards which is why I refuse and cannot support anything chromium based. I use Firefox / gecko based browsers daily.
@justincrozer @frank well one of the main parts of the pitch for wsocial is that they are going to verify everyone's identity so it might not really be an improvement if you dislike age verification.
@ikuturso @frank age verification is a control method to track people on the internet and everything they do.
Who holds their verification data and how long for? Companies have already been breached look at the discord breach as a prime example: https://arstechnica.com/security/2025/10/discord-says-hackers-stole-government-ids-of-70000-users/
It's not about not having to verify it's about privacy and security. When my own standards and practices are higher than other companies then I no longer trust them with personal information.
Any luck with the inv code? 🙂
Afraid I haven’t looked into it any more as most info on what w.social (Bluesky with ID-based account verification) will be, is available by now 🙂
